GV Guides: New Player Tips
A friendly walkthrough of what you can expect inside PokéMMO, what’s different, what to do, and where this journey can take you.
What is PokéMMO?
PokéMMO is a fan made online Pokémon experience built from five full regions: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova. You play alongside thousands of real players in a persistent world where your choices, your team, and your goals actually matter.
It looks like the classic games you remember, but it plays like a proper MMO: tougher battles, long term progression, and a living economy.
Key things to know right away
- Decreased shiny rate: Shinies are a bigger more rewarding grind.
- You can catch every Pokémon: The full Pokédex is obtainable, though some require special conditions like trading, phenomena, or events.
- No manual saving: The server constantly saves your progress and location, you never need to worry about saving.
- No money loss on defeat: You don’t lose money when you get beaten by trainers or wild Pokémon.
- Switching after a KO is disabled: When you knock out an opponent’s Pokémon, you don’t get a free switch. This increases the skill level and makes prediction more important.
Choosing your first region
You can start your journey in any of the five regions. Each one has its own flavour, pacing, and difficulty curve.
| Region | Difficulty | Why start here |
|---|---|---|
| Kanto | Easiest | Classic pacing, simple gyms, very beginner friendly. |
| Johto | Easy–Medium | Familiar routes and smooth early game, with story boss battles. |
| Hoenn | Medium | Lots of water routes, balanced gyms, solid mid game challenge. |
| Sinnoh | Harder | Stronger gym teams, slower leveling, more demanding battles. |
| Unova | Medium | Modern design, great early Pokémon variety, smooth progression. |
If you’re completely new, Kanto or Johto are the most forgiving starts. If you want a more modern feel and strong early game options, Unova is an excellent choice.
Key Differences From the Mainline Games
Difficulty & AI
Gym leaders use competitive movesets, level caps exist, switching after KO is disabled
Economy & GTL
Money matters more, GTL unlocks after the 4th badge, items cost more

Breeding is consumptive, IVs pass through braces, Everstones control nature
Region Travel
Use the pirate to travel, mother to return early, Pokémon obey only up to badge caps
MMO Features
Global chat, immersive world, PvP, GTL, events, Alphas, Swarms, Raids
Boss Battles
PokéMMO adds unique boss encounters that go beyond the original games.
How to Start Your Journey
1. Choose Your Region
Pick any region you like, all are viable. Choose a starter you enjoy; you’ll build a full team anyway.
2. Build a Team
Catch a few Pokémon early to cover roles: fast, bulky, physical, and special attackers.
3. Respect Level Caps
Each badge has a strict level cap. Fight trainers and rotate your team to stay under limits.
4. Progress the Story
Push through the region to unlock GTL, money routes, region travel, Alphas, and more.
The Global Trade Link (GTL)
The GTL is PokéMMO’s player driven marketplace, the heart of the game’s economy. It unlocks after earning your fourth badge in your first region.
What You Can Do
- Buy Pokémon with specific IVs, natures, or egg moves.
- Buy items like braces, Everstones, TMs, and held items.
- Sell Pokémon you’ve bred, caught, or trained.
- Sell items you’ve farmed or found.
- Flip listings by buying low and selling high.
How the GTL Works
- Listings last 14 days before returning to your mail.
- Listing fees apply to every transaction.
- Prices are player driven supply and demand rule everything.
- Pokémon cannot be renamed after being sold.
- Untradeable items cannot be listed.
Boss Battles
PokéMMO features two major types of boss encounters: story driven bosses you’ll meet naturally while progressing through regions, and end game raid bosses designed for experienced players.
Story Boss Battles
Throughout the story, you’ll encounter powerful scripted bosses unique to PokéMMO. These are tied to the regions and appear as part of the story.
- Gyarados - Johto
- Ho‑Oh - Johto
- Giratina - Sinnoh
Raids
Raids are end game boss encounters. They feature multi phase battles, unique mechanics, and require strong teams with their own dedicated guides.
- High level team building required
- Unique mechanics per raid
- Exclusive rewards and strategies
Elite Four Changes
The Elite Four in PokéMMO is tougher than the originals but more forgiving in key ways. Here’s what makes these battles unique and why they’re a great milestone for new players.
How the Elite Four Works
- Your team is fully healed and revived after every fight.
- You never lose money for losing.
- Each region’s Elite Four uses competitive movesets and synergy.
- Level caps still apply Rely on the whole team.
Preparing for Victory
- Bring a balanced team with good type coverage.
- Use held items like Leftovers, Choice items, and Focus Sash.
- Include priority moves to finish off threats.
- After winning, you unlock Elite Four rematches for money making.
Legendary Mechanics
PokéMMO handles legendaries very differently from the mainline games. Some roam the world and can be encountered naturally, while others become world bosses that players fight over in real time.
Roaming Legendaries
Certain legendaries appear as roaming encounters once Kanto and Johto are complete. They’re rare, unpredictable, and highly sought after.
King of the Hill
World boss legendaries like Mewtwo use a king of the hill system. One player holds the legendary while others attempt to defeat them in PvP.
Catching Every Pokémon
You can complete the entire Pokédex in PokéMMO but different Pokémon require different methods. These two cards break down how to obtain them and the tools that support your journey.
How to Get Certain Pokémon
- Trading: Classic trade evolutions still exist.
- Evolution Stones: Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf, etc.
- Happiness Evolutions: Eevee, Riolu, Golbat, and more.
- Phenomena: Shaking spots that spawn rare species.

- Alphas: High IV, powerful overworld variants
- Swarms: Temporary outbreaks of rare species.
- Region Specific Encounters: Some Pokémon only appear in certain regions.
- Tracking Tools: Pokédex, Alpha & Swarm Tracker, and community tools.
